Tree Removal & Selection

Why Remove a tree?
The primary reason is construction. There are more and more homes being built every day. At the same time our environment depends on trees so it is very important be selective when deciding whether or not a tree should be removed.

Tree selection when building: The best way to plan your tree landscape is to have someone that is familiar and knowledgeable with the trees in your area to help you select which trees you should keep before you have any contract workers begin working on the site. Then you can let them know which trees to avoid with their equipment. We would be happy to assist you with selecting those trees that you could enjoy along with your new home/addition.

Removal due to rot and decay in the main trunk: Many of the trees in our area, (specifically large black and red oaks) are considerably hollow at the base and throughout the main trunk of the tree due to a lack of nutrition and sometimes construction damage. Sometimes it is hard to see that these trees are hollow when they look very alive and full at the top. We can identify these trees but will not recommend removal of a tree unless it is absolutely necessary.

Removal when the tree is dead: It is important to get these trees removed by a professional and even more important that you do not wait. Insurance will not cover a "clearly" dead tree that has fallen on your home. Also, just putting it off even one year can cause a dead tree to become extremely brittle and even more dangerous to take down.

Tree Selection:
The question most frequently asked of tree care professionals is "What tree do you think I should plant?" Before this question can be answered, a number of factors need to be considered. Think about the following questions:

• Why is the tree being planted? Do you want the tree to provide shade, fruit, or seasonal color, or act as a windbreak or screen? Maybe more than one of the above?
• What is the size and location of the planting site? Does the space lend itself to a large, medium, or small tree? Are there overhead or below ground wires or utilities in the vicinity? Do you need to consider clearance for sidewalks, patios, or driveways? Are there other trees in the area?
• What type of soil conditions exist? Is the soil deep, fertile, and well drained or is it shallow, compacted, and infertile?
• What type of maintenance are you willing to provide? Do you have time to water, fertilize, and prune the newly planted tree until it is established or will you be relying on your garden or tree service for assistance?
